Golf Day: Carrick continues his winning streak

Just days after being crowned Players’ Player of the Year at Manchester United’s annual awards ceremony, Michael Carrick scooped his second prize of the week at the Foundation’s charity golf day.

Golf Day: Carrick continues his winning streak

The Reds’ favourite took home the individual prize from the event, which is held yearly at Dunham Forest Golf and Country Club and invites United supporters and golf enthusiasts to play a round alongside a first-team player or legend.

Former winger Lee Sharpe led his team from Seneca Partners to victory as they claimed the first place team prize, whilst star player Ryan Giggs with Park Publishing followed closely behind.

Red defender Jonny Evans commented, “I’ve been taking part in the golf day for the last three or four years now and it’s always a good day – as long as the weather stays dry! It’s enjoyable, but there’s also a competitive edge between the players and everyone here to see who will pick up the title.”

United legend Alex Stepney added, “The golf day is great fun and you meet a lot of different people, including former players and members of the present team.  We have a good time, but this event is for charity; it raises a lot of money for people who need it – that’s why I’m here and why I enjoy coming.”

The afternoon on the golf course was followed by a meal of fish and chips in the clubhouse and trophy presentation by Coronation Street stars, and friends of the Foundation, Antony Cotton and Shobna Gulati.  The actors were also on hand to host the prize raffle and announce the winners of the two signed Manchester United shirts.

The event raised over £25,000 for the Manchester United Foundation, which will go towards funding projects for underprivileged children across Greater Manchester.
